Why are your ads being
ignored?
The modern consumer is
bombarded by 35,000 advertising messages per week! That’s
5000 per day, 208 per hour, and 3 per minute.
There are so many ads
floating around that most of us actively ignore everything.
Simply buying more time and pages just won’t work. If you
are a business owner, that’s bad news.
Nobody cares
what you have to say!
The primary problem with
advertising
Many marketers are caught up in euphoria. They seem to crank
out ad after ad without ever giving serious consideration to
the content.
Does it say somewhere that to be a car dealer, you must go
on television and shout every sentence? Does the phrase
“Sales, Service, and Selection” mean anything to anybody
except the guy that wrote the ad?
And is it really a good idea
to have 7 radio commercials in a row with the exact same
announcer? Odds are that most of these crappy ads are all
being written by the same handful of unqualified,
unmotivated, and underpaid copywriters. Even worse, someone
is approving and paying for them!
Your ads must be more
noticeable than those surrounding it!
Out smarting the
competition
The old idea of spending more to get more is worthless when
it comes to advertising in an overcrowded environment.
Simply running a bad ad more times is not very smart. So
many find it necessary to create an ad that is just like the
other guy’s ad. Why is that?
It is way too tempting to get
wrapped up in the belief that everyone else cares about my
products the way that I do. And allowing minimum wage
employees like a mechanic or receptionist to influence the
ad campaign is just ludicrous. But who knows what makes an
ad good or bad?
Good Ads get Noticed
If you really want to get the most from your advertising
budget, you will begin by being different. You must realize
first and foremost that nobody cares what you have to say.
Now, you can start making
good ads! You have to create ads that will get the
attention of people who are trying very hard to ignore
you.
DON’T READ THE NEXT SENTENCE!
But since you are reading
anyway, you can rest assured that several proven attention
getting techniques exist. A few of our favorites are listed
below.
- Do something
unexpected What do you do if your tv goes to static?
You pay full attention right.
- Say something in an
unusual manner If an insurance company (AFLAC) can
get away with it anyone can.
- Be overly repetitive
This can include repeating the same phrase or even the
same 15 sec ad back to back.
Better ads start with
a better plan!
Your ads will get more
attention if you attempt to get only one point across.
This will give you the time and space required to give the
subject its due diligence. Do you remember anything about
the former Wendy’s campaign except “Where’s the Beef”?
When launching a new ad
campaign, you have to consider the merits of the ad in
its intended environment. Don’t just watch or listen to your
commercial. Watch or listen to it surrounded by 4 or 5 other
ads. You are competing with these other ads for the
consumer’s attention. If you don’t get their attention, you
won’t get their money.
